Days 118 - 119 20-21 September
Day 118 20 September
We woke as our ship sailed into and tied up at Nome Harbour. A few people walked into town, but it was quite a trek, and we decided the attractions of the big smoke didn’t justify the additional hip pain it would induce. We did walk around the ship precinct a bit and I spied a few birds but nothing we hadn’t seen before.
There was a Disembarkation Briefing and Farewell dinner at night – with yet another boring ‘meet the crew’ parade that seems endless and drives me nuts – I am just not interested in applauding the apprentice stoker or boilermaker, expedition after expedition.
Day 119 21 September
We were up early to finalise our packing and board the bus to take us on a tour of the town before we went to the airport.
Someone had seen some musk oxen near town, so the bus took us over some pretty rough tracks trying to find them again. We never found them, but I doubt if anyone cared all that much because the road was atrocious and we were all acquiring painful bruises as a consequence.
The bus then took us to the main museum, followed by a visit to an outdoor gold panning demonstration next to the beach. The guy who runs and demonstrates the equipment collects beach sand and processes it through his plant and recovers enough gold to keep him fairly comfortable by the looks of his house and vehicles.
We then went to a place where we were feted tro a demonstration for sled dogs - not my thing at all, but most people oohed and aahed over the dogs. It was a very long interlude before the dog trainer mushed the dogs for a big circuit of the area so we could take some action shots.
Next, we went to an indigenous museum and on to the local church where some of the locals provided us with a warming and nourishing, if not all that elegant, lunch. We had a little time to spare, so Heather and I visited a nearby supermarket to check out many of the unusual food items for sale – and their exorbitant prices. It was quite interesting to see how different things were from items at home, simply because what is available there is different from what we have access to at home.
Then we were back on the bus for the airport where the routine was pretty painless (maybe slightly laxer in the boondocks) and in due course we arrived at Anchorage where much more rigorous airport conditions applied. A bus then took us to the hotel where we stayed overnight, ending our Aurora Expedition.

okay on desktop now so let me copy and paste this whole speech that was too long to get copied on my phone. Imagine being at the movie theaters and hearing this conversation going on in front of you.
Extra paragraph breaks added for accessability
and then Roger de Salnis, who was still looking at Madame de Mascaret through his opera glasses, said: “It is almost incredible that that woman can have had seven children!”
“Yes, in eleven years; after which, when she was thirty, she refused to have any more, in order to take her place in society, which she seems likely to do for many years.”
“Poor women!”
“Why do you pity them?”
“Why? Ah! my dear fellow, just consider! Eleven years in a condition of motherhood for such a woman! What a hell! All her youth, all her beauty, every hope of success, every poetical ideal of a brilliant life sacrificed to that abominable law of reproduction which turns the normal woman into a mere machine for bringing children into the world.”
“What would you have? It is only Nature!”
“Yes, but I say that Nature is our enemy, that we must always fight against Nature, for she is continually bringing us back to an animal state. "You may be sure that God has not put anything on this earth that is clean, pretty, elegant or accessory to our ideal; the human brain has done it. "It is man who has introduced a little grace, beauty, unknown charm and mystery into creation by singing about it, interpreting it, by admiring it as a poet, idealizing it as an artist and by explaining it through science, doubtless making mistakes, but finding ingenious reasons, hidden grace and beauty, unknown charm and mystery in the various phenomena of Nature. "God created only coarse beings, full of the germs of disease, who, after a few years of bestial enjoyment, grow old and infirm, with all the ugliness and all the want of power of human decrepitude. He seems to have made them only in order that they may reproduce their species in an ignoble manner and then die like ephemeral insects. "I said reproduce their species in an ignoble manner and I adhere to that expression. "What is there as a matter of fact more ignoble and more repugnant than that act of reproduction of living beings, against which all delicate minds always have revolted and always will revolt? Since all the organs which have been invented by this economical and malicious Creator serve two purposes, why did He not choose another method of performing that sacred mission, which is the noblest and the most exalted of all human functions? "The mouth, which nourishes the body by means of material food, also diffuses abroad speech and thought. Our flesh renews itself of its own accord, while we are thinking about it. "The olfactory organs, through which the vital air reaches the lungs, communicate all the perfumes of the world to the brain: the smell of flowers, of woods, of trees, of the sea. "The ear, which enables us to communicate with our fellow men, has also allowed us to invent music, to create dreams, happiness, infinite and even physical pleasure by means of sound! "But one might say that the cynical and cunning Creator wished to prohibit man from ever ennobling and idealizing his intercourse with women. "Nevertheless man has found love, which is not a bad reply to that sly Deity, and he has adorned it with so much poetry that woman often forgets the sensual part of it. "Those among us who are unable to deceive themselves have invented vice and refined debauchery, which is another way of laughing at God and paying homage, immodest homage, to beauty.
“But the normal man begets children just like an animal coupled with another by law.
“Look at that woman! Is it not abominable to think that such a jewel, such a pearl, born to be beautiful, admired, feted and adored, has spent eleven years of her life in providing heirs for the Comte de Mascaret?”
Bernard Grandin replied with a laugh: “There is a great deal of truth in all that, but very few people would understand you.”
Salnis became more and more animated. “Do you know how I picture God myself?” he said. “As an enormous, creative organ beyond our ken, who scatters millions of worlds into space, just as one single fish would deposit its spawn in the sea. He creates because it is His function as God to do so, but He does not know what He is doing and is stupidly prolific in His work and is ignorant of the combinations of all kinds which are produced by His scattered germs. "The human mind is a lucky little local, passing accident which was totally unforeseen, and condemned to disappear with this earth and to recommence perhaps here or elsewhere the same or different with fresh combinations of eternally new beginnings. "We owe it to this little lapse of intelligence on His part that we are very uncomfortable in this world which was not made for us, which had not been prepared to receive us, to lodge and feed us or to satisfy reflecting beings, and we owe it to Him also that we have to struggle without ceasing against what are still called the designs of Providence, when we are really refined and civilized beings.”
Grandin, who was listening to him attentively as he had long known the surprising outbursts of his imagination, asked him: “Then you believe that human thought is the spontaneous product of blind divine generation?”
“Naturally! A fortuitous function of the nerve centres of our brain, like the unforeseen chemical action due to new mixtures and similar also to a charge of electricity, caused by friction or the unexpected proximity of some substance, similar to all phenomena caused by the infinite and fruitful fermentation of living matter.
“But, my dear fellow, the truth of this must be evident to any one who looks about him. If the human mind, ordained by an omniscient Creator, had been intended to be what it has become, exacting, inquiring, agitated, tormented—so different from mere animal thought and resignation—would the world which was created to receive the beings which we now are have been this unpleasant little park for small game, this salad patch, this wooded, rocky and spherical kitchen garden where your improvident Providence had destined us to live naked, in caves or under trees, nourished on the flesh of slaughtered animals, our brethren, or on raw vegetables nourished by the sun and the rain?
“But it is sufficient to reflect for a moment, in order to understand that this world was not made for such creatures as we are. "Thought, which is developed by a miracle in the nerves of the cells in our brain, powerless, ignorant and confused as it is, and as it will always remain, makes all of us who are intellectual beings eternal and wretched exiles on earth.
“Look at this earth, as God has given it to those who inhabit it. Is it not visibly and solely made, planted and covered with forests for the sake of animals? What is there for us? Nothing. And for them, everything, and they have nothing to do but to eat or go hunting and eat each other, according to their instincts, for God never foresaw gentleness and peaceable manners; He only foresaw the death of creatures which were bent on destroying and devouring each other. "Are not the quail, the pigeon and the partridge the natural prey of the hawk? the sheep, the stag and the ox that of the great flesh-eating animals, rather than meat to be fattened and served up to us with truffles, which have been unearthed by pigs for our special benefit?
“As to ourselves, the more civilized, intellectual and refined we are, the more we ought to conquer and subdue that animal instinct, which represents the will of God in us. "And so, in order to mitigate our lot as brutes, we have discovered and made everything, beginning with houses, then exquisite food, sauces, sweetmeats, pastry, drink, stuffs, clothes, ornaments, beds, mattresses, carriages, railways and innumerable machines, besides arts and sciences, writing and poetry. "Every ideal comes from us as do all the amenities of life, in order to make our existence as simple reproducers, for which divine Providence solely intended us, less monotonous and less hard.
“Look at this theatre. Is there not here a human world created by us, unforeseen and unknown to eternal fate, intelligible to our minds alone, a sensual and intellectual distraction, which has been invented solely by and for that discontented and restless little animal, man?
“Look at that woman, Madame de Mascaret. God intended her to live in a cave, naked or wrapped up in the skins of wild animals. But is she not better as she is? "But, speaking of her, does any one know why and how her brute of a husband, having such a companion by his side, and especially after having been boorish enough to make her a mother seven times, has suddenly left her, to run after bad women?”

Motti, Jerjerrod, Thrawn. For the name game.
Send me three names and “kriff, marry, kill” for an honest answer.
Kill Motti - For numerous offenses, including:
Yelling "A-Wing incoming!" on multiple occasions since my death to startle me.
Challenging me to a duel that has caused me to fall out of my relatively peaceful afterlife.
Purposefully placing the caf pods on the top shelf to mock my height.
Taunting me about my feelings towards General Veers, all the while subjecting me to absurd public displays of affection with Jerjerrod to remind me that I was lonely and single.
Blackmailing me into proofreading his Incident Report pertaining to Lord Vader.
Stealing my blumfruit scone from the storage chamber in the officer's lounge and thus depriving me of nourishment for the entire day.
Forcing me to play this "kriff, marry, kill" game simply because I betted on the wrong podracer during the Axxilan Fete Week Race.
Marry Grand Admiral Thrawn - To avoid marrying Motti or Jerjerrod, among other reasons. (Eli - again, see my previous disclaimer)
Kriff Jerjerrod - By process of elimination. (Motti - if you dare go after me for saying this, remember that you were the one who insisted on playing this game to begin with.)

Our dear Queen: never alone THE MONARCHIST LEAGUE OF CANADA 🍁🇨🇦

FOR TOMORROW, OUR QUEEN'S ACTUAL BIRTHDAY,,,We invite members to respond by return email by completing one of the following sentences in no more than 25 words of which we will publish an assortment of the most interesting tomorrow. You never know what might happen if yours is judged best. NB: this challenge is not the place to express condolences to The Queen or refer to her recent loss, which we each will do in our own way, with a full heart and no interest in publicity or reward. 1) I find The Queen's most endearing trait to be... 2) If I could ask HM one question, it would be... 3) If I were asked to give one piece of loyal advice to our Sovereign, I would say... LEAGUE POETRY COMPETITION ON THE NINETY-FIFTH BIRTHDAY OF THE QUEEN THREE WINNING POEMSWe were surprised and delighted by the number of entries in this first poetry competition of the League. But then, given its subject, perhaps we should not have been taken aback. The sentiments were universally heartfelt and the loyalty clear. We are therefore awarding three prizes. Two were written in English and one in French: naturally, we are not translating them! The first is a subtle evocation of The Queen’s sense of duty and her love of horses - the poet’s reference to giving up riding was of course an allusion to HM’s ceasing to ride at Trooping the Colour - she enjoys riding as relaxation to this day! The second is true to the spirit of Holst’s stirring melody, known to many as “I Vow to Thee, My Country.” And the third, the winner, explores HM’s Realms whimsically with a touch of gravity by means of their national foods. The poems could not be more different - which is as it should be. Our thanks to all who entered the competition! SECOND PRIZE TIED by Tom MacGregor, Ottawa ON QUEEN ELIZABETH’S 95th BIRTHDAY On her ninety-fifth birthday, I think of the Statue on Parliament Hill Of her confidently seated On a horse named Centennial Given to her by The Royal Canadian Mounted Police. The small woman unveiled it In 1991 after she had given up riding. Still, she carried on More than 60 years as Queen And 95 of service. FIRST PRIZE by an anonymous member who is donating the value of the prize to supply a food treat to the homeless today in honour of The Queen’s birthday QUEEN OF THE SIXTEEN REALMS On the 95th birthday of Elizabeth II PROLOGUE Elizabeth, to your Realms grandmother, sister, friend and Queen: How can we embrace you, and today let you know That we would your sorrow share, wish you could lean On our sixteen hearts, like the drums, beating slow. We look back as you must on Philip’s decades: Your strength and stay during storm and fair days. We gaze also to our future wish: grief ‘midst memories fades To joy of life full-lived, walked on the fields of praise. So follows our birthday wish, from Realms richly diverse, Who now tune their heart-strings to the happier times Which will follow, dear Ma’am, as sure as sunrise: A great truth of life, which we need not more rehearse, But, rather, assure you: north, west, east, southern climes Gather round to uphold you, dear Queen - loving and wise! ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Elizabeth, our Queen and friend, the nations’ joy and pride, Her 95th today is hailed through Realms both far and wide; And since all share in most fond wish to serve special birthday treat - These lines some local fare suggest - loyal banquet so replete! In ANTIGUA AND BARBUDA, small islands to be sure, But big in heart and loyalty - FUNGIE ‘tis special allure: Polenta-based and spicy hot, with pepperpot ‘tis served, A treat for their beloved Queen, one surely well deserved! Down Under, AUSTRALIAN mates present their VEGEMITE: This brewers’ yeast extract not yet the world’s delight! But served on toast throughout the land, a tribute singular - quite - Antipodean Queen finds on Aussie plate a most distinct delight. THE BAHAMAS offers special dish: folk there pluck CONCH from sea: And dressed with lime and vegetables - ‘tis rich in Vitamin C! Bahamian Sovereign will enjoy devouring “Queen Conch” recipe, Dressed with fruit, offered with love and Island loyalty BARBADOS, amidst disloyal dance, bakes up its famed RUM CAKE On which Monarch’s pain at such dalliance might well her sweet tooth slake; Since toothsome confection is topped up with frequent rum infusion: EIIR hopes (though’d never say) “Drink deep: to republican confusion!” BELIZE proffers its BOIL UP, reminiscent of the pie in rhyme: No blackbirds for its Queen today, but fish, eggs, veggies: good time! Tis topped with broth and dough, then baked - a treat fit for a princess, The Central American domain diverse could offer her no less! CANADA may indeed be home to most loyal Maple Throne: Thus on this day POUTINE shall stand in prominence, alone: Like the Dominion, flavours many, with toppings beyond measure - As each in own way toasts our Queen, the True North’s splendid treasure! GRENADA’s OIL DOWN, savoury-sweet, a one pot dish of stew, With coconut leaching flavours out to make each casserole new To taste - and variegated ever for all this island nation. Which prospers under Reign of she whose birthday brings elation! Next in our roll of Realms, JAMAICA, island, of many peoples, blest To keep cool ‘neath tropical sun with ACKEE AND SALTFISH zest: Its spices mirror nation’s mix, from planters to Bobsled team; And dread-locked Rasta men, who share deepest love of Queen. PAVLOVA is NEW ZEALAND’s gift to the arts culinary, Its Kiwi, cream, meringue mix cherished by settlers as by Maori; Whether Hobbits share such taste, brave Frodo first and foremost, We know not - but all in the island realm drink to EIIR a toast! A BREADFRUIT ROASTED in iron pot, add fried jackfish for great repast, Is SAINT VINCENT & THE GRENADINES’ entrée, not easily surpassed: Its thirty-two islands celebrate their Monarch’s special day, Sing “...Land, so Beautiful” to big drum, calypso, steel pan and reggae! Now Taro roots make sticky POI, SOLOMON ISLANDS’ favorite food, The wise old King lends his name to 900-strong island brood; Thus Melanesian Queen presides, with Governor-General elected: Their birthday bouquet beauteous, as from 200 orchid strains selected! TUVALU brings to feast PULAKA, swamp taro cooked for hours: Raising ocean discourages cultivation - ‘tis time for Commonwealth powers To use their world wide fellowship to save this crop essential: Their Queen fears global warming looms, Polynesian threat potential. The UNITED KINGDOM is Elizabeth’s home, of sixteen Realms The Queen: No longer a colonial power, but from Empire’s legacy yet seen: Its “national dish” CHICKEN TIKKA MASALA now claims pride of place, Transcending old-style differences of climate, Raj and race! ~! ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ EPILOGUESo, all hail, dear Queen, gracious Lady: your true realms lie deep within, Not geographic, to be sure, but values kingly. gracious, human; Constant Commonwealth care for its nations great and small, Reflects deep-reciprocal, hailed to your heart, one voice echoed by all! So here’s to Elizabeth - long may she reign, long live our monarch so great! Here’s to her courage in fair weather or foul, duty done, chosen not - happy fate! The Gift That Keeps On Giving by Moya
I met Taryn at a friend’s potluck. Taryn made some sausage and apple scones that people could not stop raving about and me, being a strict vegetarian at the time, didn’t eat them. It’s a decision that I still regret to this day. She has never made them again. Taryn and I connected though, quirky Black girls from states people forget about and don’t assume Black people can be from. It was not long after, that I enlisted Taryn’s help to make the food for my 29th birthday party, The Gemini JAM. This epic fete had become an Atlanta institution and I knew that food would set it off in a new way that year. I was living a truly charmed grad school all but dissertation life, living in East Point and renting a very affordable impeccable home owned and previously lived in by queer Black witches. I had money to burn!
Taryn and her then partner Ceci had a tasting with me and I got to sample the food that would be on offer for the party. My palate was delighted and we laughed and drank as we planned the menu. It was through this process that Fixin’s de Amor was born, Taryn and Ceci’s catering company that provided delicious gourmet meals to the movement orgs in Atlanta and beyond in the years that followed. Needless to say, the party was poppin’ and the food phenomenal. Taryn and I cemented ourselves into a beautiful dynamic of chef and patron and I continue to savor this aspect of our friendship.
Fast forward to the pandemic and my latest venture, Black Feminist Heath Science Studies. I envisioned a COVID safe retreat to set the tone for how this fledgling collective would/could with one another. I immediately thought of Taryn and their food as key ingredients for the recipe’s success. We faced trials and tribulations of biblical proportions but finally got it together to have one of the most delightfully nourishing meals and chef talks I’ve ever experienced.
On the first full day of the retreat, Taryn started us off with a dining experience that I don’t think can ever be matched. With Anita Baker setting the tone, and these deviled eggs that made Whitney cry the first time she had them at the Gemini JAM ten years ago, we were off to an incredible start. A southern style ceviche with corn and lima beans accompanied by a Blackberry Jam and gin cocktail as well as sweet or unsweetened tea with mint set our tastebuds alight. But the piece de resistance was the resurrection of these grilled mushrooms smothered in a sauce that made them taste like little morsels from heaven. Taryn had not made them since my birthday party and as opposed to the handmade tortillas they filled for the JAM, this retreat, they rested atop a grit cake with a tomatillo salsa and charred pineapple to finish it off. I was transported, back to Atlanta, back to the witches’ home.
The flavor of the sweet potatoes and peppers has stayed with me and the fried chicken and greens with smoked turkey legs continue to affirm that my position as a flexitarian is this right one. The 7up Cake that capped off the meal took me back to my Auntie Goldbie’s kitchen just outside Birmingham, Alabama. I had transcended. Time and space transformed through the nourishment of good food, fellowship, and a decade’s long friendship that was aging like a fine wine.
I love bringing folks together and it was a delight to do it again around an incredible meal by the one and only Taryn Jordan. There was a moment when we caught each other’s eye across the table and shared a look of knowing, celebrating the incredible experience we had curated together. That moment is one I will continue to treasure for the decades to come! Can’t wait to do it again! Salud!!!

Quick and Healthy Fish Tacos
New Post has been published on https://foodloverrecipes.com/blog/quick-and-healthy-fish-tacos/
Quick and Healthy Fish Tacos

Fish tacos so delicious, you can imagine yourself in a beachside restaurant. Flaky chili-lime seasoned fish, crunchy cilantro-cabbage slaw, and a light adobo crema make an irresistible combination.
Hey there! It’s Monica from Nourish and Fete, and I’m so excited to share another fresh, fast, and flavorful recipe with you. If you love tacos, you’re in the right place!
Tacos are pretty much a weekly event in my house, and I love the endless variety of good fillings. You can never have too many options! We love a good blackened salmon or making easy ground beef taco meat in the Instant Pot.
You’ll love that these fish tacos have restaurant-quality flavor, yet land on the table in just 25 minutes, with no need to turn on the oven. The fish is perfectly seasoned and cooked to flaky perfection with just a few minutes in a piping hot skillet. So easy!
What you need to make healthy fish tacos
Tilapia or another firm white fish.
Avocado or olive oil: I prefer cooking the fish in avocado oil, because it has a higher smoke point, but olive oil works, as well.
Shredded cabbage: red, white, or a combination.
Shredded carrots: add terrific color, crunch, and nutrition to the slaw.
Limes: pick up several. You’ll want to use lime juice in the fish, crema, and slaw, and a few extra wedges make for a beautiful presentation served alongside the tacos.
Chopped cilantro: a brilliant pop of both color and flavor in the slaw.
Sour cream or plain Greek yogurt: either works well as the base of the crema, so use whichever you keep on hand.
Adobo sauce: this is the magic sauce that surrounds canned chipotle chili peppers, which are sold near other Mexican products in most major grocery stores. If you don’t have any, leave it out and add 1/2 teaspoon chili powder to the crema, instead.
Seasonings: cumin, chili powder, kosher salt.
Tortillas for serving: The fish and slaw are so flavorful you don’t need to go crazy on additional toppings, but of course you need a taco vessel! Use any variety you like. For a special occasion, we really love making either corn or flour tortillas at home. It’s surprisingly easy and extremely rewarding!

Tips and tricks
Save your extra adobo: You only need a little bit of adobo sauce for this recipe, so transfer the extra — along with the chilis — to a small airtight container and store in the fridge. It stays good for weeks and is amazing to have on hand. It adds flavor and heat to just about any Mexican or Tex-Mex meal.
Don’t fret the fish: Don’t worry if the fish breaks apart while it cooks in the skillet. You want it in chunks anyway for the tacos! This is another reason this recipe is so easy and stress-free.
Char your tortillas! This is a simple trick, but one that I skipped for far too many years before realizing how easy and impactful it is. If you have a gas range, simply hold each tortilla over the open flame for 3-4 seconds on each side, using tongs to flip. This is the secret to those charred edges and the best way to make tortillas soft and pliable. Just watch them carefully — I have had a tortilla or two start to smoke. 😉
Layer thoughtfully: It may seem counterintuitive, but I like to build these tacos with the slaw on the bottom, followed by the fish, topped with the crema. I find this approach keeps the tortilla from getting soggy and helps everything hold together.

Season the fish on both sides with cumin, chili powder, and salt; set aside.
Prep the sauce and the slaw. Whisk sour cream or Greek yogurt, juice of 1/2 lime, water, chili powder, and salt together in a small bowl. Toss slaw ingredients together in a medium bowl. Place both in the fridge until ready to eat.
Cook the fish. Drizzle olive or avocado oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. When hot, place fish in the skillet and cook for 4-5 minutes on each side, just until the fish is cooked through and blackened in spots. Remove fish from the skillet, spritz with lime juice, and break apart into large chunks.
Assemble the tacos, starting with the charred or warmed tortilla and layering on slaw, fish, and sauce, in that order. Add other toppings, as desired, and serve with extra lime wedges.
Notes
Adobo sauce is most easily found in a small can accompanying chipotle chili peppers, which you can usually find near other Mexican foods in major grocery stores. If you don’t have any, leave it out and stir 1/2 teaspoon chili powder into the sauce, instead.
This yields between 8-12 tacos, depending on how large and how full your tortillas are. Nutritional estimate is per 2 generous tacos, or 1/4 of the recipe, but will vary depending on the type of tortillas and other toppings used.
